iPhone HD - A gimmie, of course, with 64 GB storage, front and rear camera, a version of iChat for video calls, 720p recording.

iPhone OS 4.0 - While already introduced, new features will be shown off (video chat for example) and it will be available within days.

AppleTV - This will correspond with the new iPhone since the hardware will be shared. It will be the size of the iPhone with a power and HDMI port only. It will stream 1080p out and possible run some pre-built apps (pandora, MLB, etc..).

New iTunes - Also a gimmie, but I think we'll see mo...... FULL STORY

iPad thoughts / grades

Like many others, I watched the announcement yesterday (via various live streams) and also kept up on the sites live blogging. I must say that after the iPad was introduced and described, I could not help but feel very let down. It's the one things that the rumors kept saying, and the one thing I did not want... a giant iPod Touch. In fact... a lesser iPod Touch since it lacks some of it's built in apps. While I could see this device as something I would use a lot around the house to surf the web and check email... I already have lots of ways to do that and spending at least $500 for a slightly better experience is going to be tough to swallow. I'll even go out on a limb and put them in order of how they will be presented.

iTunes - Cheaper TV show, or maybe even a subscription service. It seems time to match the competition and offer 1080p movies. There will be something about moving to the cloud. I can see the iTunes application on the web at iTunes.com and also the ability to stream music directly to devices.

iPhone - Announcement that the iPhone will be going to Verizon (and maybe T-Mobile) this summer. There will not be talk of new hardware, that will be saved for WWDC.

I'm not sure why I picked out this book other then the desire for something different. A great story, well defined character, and a plot with twist and turns to keep you guessing always make for a good read. Unfortunately, this book falls a little short on all of those.

Also of note is that beta 2 will expire July 28th at midnight, so anyone on the beta better upgrade soon.

Once I install it tonight I'll report back with any changes I notice... like being able to make a phone call on the first attempt and not having it drop a minute later. Crazy improvements like that since beta 1 & 2.
I spend a lot of my day listening (and watching) podcasts. It can be on my iPhone, laptop, or even in HD on my AppleTV. The ability to start and stop as needed and have them available at all times is perfect for my schedule. Not to mention that some of the best content out there is delivered free over the net. Honestly television kinda sucks these days, specially during the summer months. If not for the Tiger's games I'd probably cancel cable.
So here is a list of the podcast that I listen to on a regular basis. I've enjoyed the Call of Duty games since the original. The way the story is told and the action unfolds via scripted plot points was always so well done it really sucked you into the gameplay. Then with Modern Warfare all that was taken up a notch in one of the best games I've ever played. So when World at War was announced I was skeptical... WW2 again? a different company making the game?. I held off playing for many months until I found a good deal on the game and noticed that everyone online was playing it.
- iPhone OS 3.0 - More demos for sure with new apps and wireless devices. Was right in that developers could download that day and only missed the general release by five days. GRADE: A-
I have high hopes for what will be announced, yet I fear that I'm going to be disappointed (at least for now).

Snow Leopard - I think a good long portion of the event will be about the new OS. Demos will be given, some now features introduced, and a release date set. My guess is that people at the event will get the RC versison (or whatever Apple calls it) and the full OS will be released in August. I also predict that a price of around $50 will be set to stay competitive with Windows 7's upgrade cost.
It was my first time going down to Joe Louis arena and it was actually really cool being there. It's much smaller then it looks on TV. Now....granted the game itself was pathetic and trying to get a shuttle back to our car after the game was an chilly adventure.. but overall I'd do it again. Well... perhaps a Tigers game when it's warmer out :)
I haven't had a chance yet to play with all the new features, but as I do I'll post my initial thoughts here.

Installation:
- The install went went fine initially on my MacBook Pro. Took about 30 minutes and required a reboot.
- On the MacBook the install failed saying that it could not find a product to install. I rebooted and tried again, but got the same error. I then remembered that Apple release some updates to iLife '08 the other day. I ran software update and installed what was available. After another reboot the install proceeded without error. While not the worst thing I've seen, it just seems out of place for the normally minimalistic Apple environment. What I do like is the look of the dock when moved to either to the left or right hand side of the screen. It becomes 2D with a dark transparent background and a single clean line surrounding it. Unfortunately having the dock on the sides never works for me. I usually have my IM open on one edge and desktop icons on the other side, not to mention the chaos caused by adding multiple monitors.
After a brief search I came across the free application <a href="http://www.eternalstorms.at/utilities/2dornot2d/index.ht...... FULL STORY

Site of the Day: Let Me Google That For You

As an IT professional I get asked a lot of questions everyday. Some are complex requiring my in-depth knowledge and years of experience, but alas, most are answered by a 5 second Google search that a trained monkey could have done. I'm sure anyone in IT support or even the poor soul that's the 'tech' person in the family knows what I'm talking about. Well someone felt our pain and created a site that both answers the questions posed to us and subtly reminds the end user that they could have done it themselves... and how easy it would have been. Sometimes you just need a change to reflect the mood of the day, the change of season, or to just make you wish you were somewhere else. Finding good quality, high resolution wallpaper is not always easy. A few years ago I found the website InterfaceLIFT which contains great photos specifically designed with the desktop in mind. They come in widescreen, full screen, hdtv, dual monitor, heck even three monitors wide. Even the most complex pages, full of javascript, show up perfectly. I was surprised today when I loaded paulmaleck.com on my phone and noticed that the font sizes were all wrong in some areas. This was causing overflow of text and resulting in the page being unreadable. I spent a good amount of time looking for code errors I had made, either in the HTML or CSS, but found none. After some googling I found that mobile safari can at times try to auto-adjust the font sizes. Not sure the logic behind this, but I know it's not something I want. The great thing about the iPhone is that it shows the web in the exact same ...... FULL STORY

Best Year Ever

2008 has come and gone and it's that time of year when one naturally reflects back on the previous twelve months. I heard a lot lately on how people want to forget 2008, how they just want to look forward to 2009 and the promise it might bring. It's understandable actually, with the economic collapse (ten fold worse here in Detroit), incompetent government leadership, and another year of war. For me, I have a slightly different take.

For one thing, sports provided many high points for me. The year started off great with Ryan Newman winning the Daytona 500, ending a winless streak that was starting to tarnish a still young career. I was home and on my main monitor, a 20.1" Dell from years back. It was at that point I noticed a dark area towards the bottom of the screen. Dirt maybe?.. nope. It was a permanent burn in, or dying pixel, not sure, but now that I see it I cannot ignore it, no matter how hard I try.

Ok, well it's been a few years and I could use some more real estate and perhaps a higher resolution... ok, time for a new monitor. Now I looked around at Dell's and HP's, but I was really hooked on the Apple cinema displays.
